There is a key understanding you must wrap you mind around before you pick up your first dumbbell or take your first run. You are starting a change in your lifestyle.  Exercising, in whatever form you chose, is something that you are going to do .....for the rest of your life.  There is no such thing as a "6 Week Program" or a "6 Month Program" because, as soon as you complete them, if you then don`t continue to exercise, you will start to lose what you`ve gained. Your body will naturally return to the condition it was in before you initiated those exercise programs.  Then, all that "sweat equity" you invested in yourself will have been lost.

An Exercise Format

How do you decide what exercise program is best for you? Here are some suggestions.

  1. Talk to friends who are engaged in an exercise program.  Find out how they got started and what benefits they have gained.           
                                                                                       
  2. Visit facilities such as the YMCA, Curves or a martial arts studio and ask questions about their fitness programs.  
         
  3. Remember what activities you use to do in high school or college.  Would you want to do them again?        
                      
  4. Talk to a personal trainer (or three).  See if they will sit down with you and explain their program before you actually begin an exercise program.  Do you have confidence in that person and their abilities?

       5.   When you run across a fitness article that catches your interest, save it in a folder.  Keep it in your car or briefcase.  Then, when you are waiting in the dentist`s office or at the airport, pull that article out and read it.  Every piece of  information is another segment to the puzzle of getting in shape.

Enjoy What You Are Doing

In selecting a plan of action, you want to select something for which you have an affinity.  You have set aside time in your busy schedule to commit to working out.  Just as you bring enthusiasm to your job and to your family, so too do you want to bring enthusiasm to your workout.  To look forward to, as opposed to "having to do it," can make all the difference in the world when it comes to staying the course.

Keep A Record

It amazes me how most people who exercise regularly never write down what they accomplished that day.  You may, in general, know you ran or lifted weights, but it`s virtually impossible to keep track in your head all your run times, the amount of weight lifted, your reps, the days your worked out last month, the specific exercises, etc.

From day one, start writing down your efforts.  If you document from the outset what you have accomplished, you are, in essence, writing a contract with yourself.  Imagine picking up that notebook 3 months from now and being able to see everything that you have achieved.  By recording what you`ve done and when you did it, you will be reinforcing your chances of reaching the self-image you envision.
